Tuscaloosa District 3 Election

As part of our commitment to keeping the community informed, the Animal Welfare Collaborative reached out to candidates for Tuscaloosa City Council District 3 to better understand their positions on key local animal welfare issues. We believe voters deserve clear, accessible information about where candidates stand on topics that impact both animals and the people who care for them. You can review each candidate’s responses below. The Animal Welfare Collaborative does not currently endorse candidates and operates as a nonpartisan organization. This effort is intended solely to provide information and increase community awareness of local animal welfare issues.
Canidate Positions
1. Would you be open to supporting a proposal to create a pet registration ordinance for dogs (and potentially cats) to improve return-to-owner rates, vaccination compliance, and accountability for roaming animals? Especially given that a significant percentage of animals entering Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter are not up to date on rabies vaccinations as required by state law?
2. Would you be open to supporting a proposal to allocate more city funding to expand low-cost or free spay/neuter programs to reduce stray intake and euthanasia rates? The city currently allocates funding to TSNIP for feral cat management with strong results, would you be open to expanding similar funding models to include dogs?
3. Would you be open to supporting a proposal to invest in a new or significantly upgraded animal shelter facility to address capacity, public access, and humane housing standards? The current Metro Animal Shelter was built over 30 years ago and has significant structural issues, including severe drainage problems estimated by county contractors to cost over $1 million to repair.
